I suppose 9 was a bit provocative (but I think it is true, even if that shouldn't be a primary reason to have an apprentice)!

I think 7 and 8 still hold up - of course they are true of every person in the church, but they are particularly true of apprentices. I think some people are a bit hesitant talking to a senior church leader about some things than they are to an apprentice, who has a foot in both camps (the congregation and the staff team). Also, being on the staff team, an apprentice gets opportunities to directly contribute and suggest things that affect church life, in a way that members of the congregation can't.

Phil
9. is a very bad reason to have apprentices; they are not cheap labour - we're meant to train them not exploit them
8. is true but so can anyone so why make them an apprentice!
7. is also true of any congregational member
perks

i've put a load more on apprentices on the training page, which you make wish to persude at your leisure, though shouldn't you be revising?!

These reasons are all about why people should become apprentices, rather than why it is good for a church to have them. So here are some more:

7. Apprentices can relate to people in a way that a senior church leader might not be able to

8. Apprentices can bring a fresh approach and perspective to church life

9. Apprentices are a cheap way to get help running a church

I dislike the word "apprentice" because it contains the suggestion that after a number of years you can be a proficient master craftsman in your profession. This is never the case for the Christian or Christian pastor/minister. The process of learning continues for the whole life of the believer as they read, meditate on and apply God's Word in their lives.

It is wonderful for those considering or training for the Christian ministry to have the kind of role models that encourage them to faithfully preach and teach all the Scriptures and do so in simple language with the focus on Jesus and to the glory of God. An apprentice in a trade achieves the standard of his master craftsman trainer by imitation. Those being prepared for ministry should not imitate or mimic their teachers but learn from the content, focus and presentation of their teachers and adapt the way they teach to their own personality. I would, for these reasons, prefer to see some term or phrase other than "apprentice" used to describe this task of preparation.
