Jesus is the Dragon Warrior

Had the privilege of going into our local Primary School this morning. It was the Harvest Festival assembly and the theme was, get this, peace! It actually makes more sense than you think. It was Peace Week last week. And most of the kids haven’t seen a field, let alone know where their vegetables come from. Anyway I do what I’m told. And the Head Teacher told me what she wanted. I was very happy to oblige.

But the pressing implication was the need to come up with a new assembly. The 2005 Harvest Assembly involving the peerless game ‘vegetable recognition’, a game using little more than an OHP and a vivid imigination, went back into the filing cabinet for another year. And then inspiration came. From a big fat Panda! Reading a story with Digby on Tuesday night I learnt that the long promised ‘Dragon Warrior’ would protect the peace in the ‘Valley Of Peace’. Get in there! The ancient chinese scriptures looked forward, we were told, to the appearing of the promised one. He would defeat the wicked snow leopard ‘Tai Lung’ and preserve peace in the Valley of Peace. But who was the long awaited ‘Dragon Warrior’ who would bring peace? Certainly none of ‘The Five’. These great King Fu exponents weren’t what the scroll predicted. No, it was ‘Po’, a big fat panda. But not just any big fat panda. The big fat panda. You don’t believe me? Go here and see for yourself.

All I needed was the smooth transition from Po to Jesus. And then it came to me. Peace doesn’t always come from the person you might expect. Nice. See what I did there?! Sometimes I love my job! It’d be pretty easy to write off Po on the basis of what he looks like. But he’s the one alright. He faces the sworn enemy of peace, defeats him and brings peace in the ‘Valley of Peace’. Genius. Don’t write Jesus off just because he’s not what you expect. The Bible says that God sent him as the long promised one to bring us peace.

If you’ve not yet seen King Fu Panda do your self a favour, it’s terrific. As for my extra points I settled on these,

1. Jesus brings us peace with God (Colossians 1)

2. Jesus brings us peace with one another (Galatians 5)

3. Jesus brings us peace with ourselves (Philippians 4)

Kung Fu Panda is brilliant. He brought peace to the ‘Valley of Peace’. But Jesus is better.

I’m assuming that’s a direct quote from the film! You’ve seen it! And yet you have no children. I bet you didn’t watch it in the cinema!
