Valentine’s Day Kids’ Slot

Valentines

Can anyone tell me what today is?

Here’s a clue (hold up a picture of a huge Valentine’s card

That’s right, it’s Valentine’s Day

Can anyone tell me what Valentine’s Day is all about?

That’s right, it’s meant to be about love.

Can anyone tell me what love is?

It’s not easy, is it?

How do you think we might know what love is? How can we find out? Who should we ask?

God invented love. So why don’t we listen to what He has to say about it.

Listen to this verse in the Bible, 1 John 3:16

16 This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us.

No one has ever or will ever do anything as loving as Jesus did. His death on the cross shows us what love is. He didn’t just think about dying for us. He didn’t just talk about dying for us. He actually died for us. And he did it because he loves us.

Love isn’t about thinking and it’s not about talking it’s about doing.

How will Rufus, Flora and Digby know that I love them?

If I think about helping them with their homework …

If I talk about helping them with their homework  …

Or if I actually help them with their homework when I’m busy

How will Rosslyn know that I love her?

Thinking about sending her a Valentine’s Day card ..

Talking about buying her some flowers …

Or by doing the washing up so that she doesn’t have to?

Love isn’t about thinking and it’s not about talking it’s about doing.

Listen to how that passage continues

So we should give our lives for our brothers. 17 Suppose a believer is rich enough to have all that he needs. He sees his brother in Christ who is poor and does not have what he needs. What if the believer does not help the poor brother? Then the believer does not have God’s love in his heart.18 My children, our love should not be only words and talk. Our love must be true love. And we should show that love by what we do.

What does God say we should do to someone in church who is poor and doesn’t have what they need?

That’s right, we should provide for them.

Let’s think about some other ways that you could love …

Imagine someone is new to Sunday School and doesn’t know anyone, how can you love them?

Imagine you want to be naughty and play around in Sunday School but there are others that want to listen, how can you love your friends in Sunday School?

Love isn’t about thinking, it’s not about talking it’s about doing.

Let’s pray
